From Concept to $150 MRR: My Indie Building Journey with SteelSync(.)io

Hello, indie builders. Tonight, I'm excited to share the journey of SteelSync, a tool born out of necessity to bridge the communication gap between tech and business teams using Linear. From initial brainstorming to reaching $150 in monthly recurring revenue (MRR), this is the story of a builder with full transparency.

Early Days and MVP Launch:
Our journey began on November 20, with a brainstorming session that quickly led to the development of an MVP by November 24. We onboarded 10 beta testers who provided feedback, setting the stage for our "official" launch. Didn't do anything for the launch, except push the URL on Google

V0 Launch and User Acquisition:
By January 1, we launched V0, which attracted over 100 free users (with the ones from the MVP). The real test came on February 19, when we transitioned to V1 with monetization, introducing a 15-day free trial without a credit card requirement. This version featured a new user experience designed to ease the onboarding process (which was a total nightmare before that).

Refining Our Offering:
Mid-March marked a shift in our strategy as we shortened the free trial to 7 days (still no credit card). This pivot was crucial for focusing on user conversion. On March 26, we celebrated our first paying customer, contributing $19 to our first MRR.

(best day ever 😍)

What we've done, try, and "succeed" to reach this step:

  • Published 13 SEO-driven blog articles.
  • Shared insights and updates in over 10 LinkedIn posts
  • Send over 500 direct messages on LinkedIn
  • Maintained transparency and built a following by 'building in public' on Twitter.
  • Cold email outreach to over 1,000 Product Managers, Developers, and Founders who use Linear.
  • Featured in a renowned newsletter and listed on various SaaS directories, enhancing our visibility - I have a list of +150 SaaS Directories where to post 😋

Growth and Insights:
Reaching $150 MRR within 90 days post-monetization was a significant milestone for me - the first time in my life. This achievement is not just a number—it's a testament to the robustness of our solution and the community's trust in SteelSync.

Slow but every month is better than the one before 💪

👇
The path to $150 MRR was paved with challenges, learning, and relentless pursuit of growth. The next step for me? Reach $1,000 MRR by the end of 2024, and eventually $10,000 MRR by the end of 2025!

To all indie builders, keep pushing boundaries, listen to your users, and stay committed to your vision 🚀
