Hey Indie Hackers!
We're fn7 Helix and last week we hit a major milestone: Product of the Day on Product Hunt! Even crazier, we launched the same day as GPT-4.5. Talk about a launch challenge!
We wanted to quickly share our experience and a few key takeaways for fellow indie builders looking to launch on Product Hunt.
Our Quick Story: We launched fn7 Helix on PH aiming for visibility and feedback. Seeing GPT-4.5 launch the same day was initially daunting, but we focused on community engagement and highlighting our product's specific value. To our surprise (and delight!), we ended up as POTD.
Key Actionable "Dos" that Moved the Needle:
Visuals Matter (Especially on Mobile): Use clear, image-based feature explanations with readable fonts on mobile. Demo videos help.
Pre-Launch Buzz is Real: Start promoting your launch banner & "Notify Me" link 1-2 weeks before.
Day Before = Social Blitz: Ramp up social media and pre-post in relevant communities.
Team Support for Early Spark: Equip your team to engage quickly in the first few hours.
Crucial "Don'ts" We Learned:
No Fake Upvotes - Ever: PH is smart, don't risk penalties. Genuine engagement only.
Respond to Every Comment - Fast: Show you're present and value the community.
Biggest Takeaway for Indies: Product Hunt is powerful for visibility, feedback, and early user acquisition. Even without a massive marketing budget, a focused launch can make a huge difference. We got featured in newsletters and saw a real boost in users.
