From oil painter to solo dev: PaintFlow AI just landed its first real paying customers

Quick build-in-public update on PaintFlow AI (paintflowai.com) — an AI tool that turns your photos into oil painting tutorials, styled after Old Masters technique (grisaille, limited palette, wet-brush detailing).

Background on me: I was a traditional oil and charcoal painter before I taught myself to code. PaintFlow AI is basically me encoding my own painting process into an algorithm.

Milestone: just got our first handful of real paying customers — a mix of monthly subscribers and one-time starter packs. Small numbers, but it's the first proof that strangers will pay for this.

What's been working:

  • Pinterest is our strongest channel so far — dark, moody "guide"-style infographic pins are outperforming photo-style pins by a wide margin
  • Noticed AI assistants (ChatGPT, etc.) sending us traffic — people are literally asking AI "how do I turn a photo into an oil painting" and getting pointed to us
  • Expanded from 5 to 10 how-to-paint subject pages (pet portraits, memorial portraits, florals, etc.) for SEO

What's next: tightening up the billing/subscription edge cases (found a bug where returning customers got asked to pay again) and building out a "Founding Patron" pricing tier.

Happy to answer questions about the painting algorithm, the SEO approach, or going from artist to solo dev.

The first payments are the strongest signal here. Do Pinterest customers, AI-referred visitors, and SEO visitors differ meaningfully in conversion or retention, or is one channel clearly producing better customers?

Good question — honestly still too early for me to say with real data since the numbers are small, but a few qualitative things I've noticed: Pinterest traffic converts, but a lot of it feels impulse-driven (someone sees a "guide" pin, likes the style, buys the one-time starter pack). The AI-referred traffic feels different — people are already deep into "how do I do X" mode when they arrive, so they tend to skip straight to the subscription rather than the cheaper one-off. SEO is still too new for me to say anything meaningful yet. Will actually start tracking this properly now that you've made me realize I'm flying blind on it.

That’s already a useful split between the channels. I’d be curious to see how it develops. If you’re open to it, what’s the best email to reach you on?
