From Paper Menus to AI-Powered Digital Ordering: How I Built Qr Studio

I’ve spent years watching restaurant owners struggle with the same problems: expensive menu printing, constant updates, lost QR code providers, and clunky digital menu tools that feel like they were built in 2015.

So I decided to fix it.

The Pain Point That Started It All

Most restaurants still rely on printed menus that become outdated the moment they change a price, add a seasonal dish, or run out of an ingredient. During COVID, many switched to basic QR menus, but the solutions on the market were either:

  • Overpriced (especially for small cafes)

  • Too complicated for non-technical owners

  • Or extremely limited in features

I wanted something better: upload a photo of your existing paper menu → AI builds the full digital version automatically.

That became the core of Qr Studio .

The "Upload Photo → Magic" Feature

The killer feature is dead simple:

  1. Take a photo of your paper menu or upload a PDF

  2. Our AI (powered by Claude + GPT-4o Vision) reads everything — categories, dish names, descriptions, prices, even in multiple languages

  3. It generates a beautiful, mobile-optimized digital menu

  4. You review, tweak, add photos, and publish

This process takes most users under 2-3 minutes instead of hours of manual entry.

Beyond Just a Menu

I didn’t want to build just another QR menu generator. Qr Studio includes everything a small-to-medium venue actually needs:

  • Per-table QR codes (the system knows exactly which table placed the order)

  • Table ordering — guests add to cart and send orders straight to the kitchen dashboard

  • "Call Waiter" button with instant Telegram notifications (this one is stupidly popular)

  • Real-time order status (New → Preparing → Ready)

  • Analytics on popular items and peak hours

  • Multi-language support (11 languages in the admin)

  • Multiple menus (lunch/dinner/seasonal)

All without forcing guests to download an app.

Pricing Philosophy

I hate SaaS tools that nickel-and-dime small businesses. That's why:

  • Free plan is genuinely useful (including unlimited AI imports)

  • Pro plan is only $19/month for most restaurants

  • Business plan at $49/month for bigger operations

No per-scan fees, no hidden charges. You can literally start for free and upgrade only when you need more tables or advanced features.

Building in Public as a Solo Founder

Like many Indie Hackers, I built this while balancing other work. The tech stack is straightforward but effective:

  • Next.js + Supabase

  • AI vision models for menu parsing

  • Tailwind for quick, clean UI

  • Telegram integration for notifications (keeps it lightweight)

The hardest part wasn't the AI — it was making the whole flow feel magical for non-technical restaurant owners. I spent weeks testing with real cafe owners in different countries to nail the UX.

Early Results & Lessons

In the first few months:

  • Hundreds of restaurants signed up

  • The AI import feature has the highest "wow" factor — people literally message me saying "this is insane"

  • Retention is strong because once a restaurant switches to digital, they rarely go back to paper

Key lesson: Solve a boring but painful problem extremely well. Restaurants don't want another "revolutionary platform." They want something that saves them time and money every single week.

Advice for Other Builders

If you're thinking about building in the restaurant/tech space:

  1. Talk to actual owners, not just read articles

  2. Make onboarding stupidly easy (this is where most tools fail)

  3. Start with the free tier — it builds trust

  4. Focus on one killer feature first (in my case, AI menu import)

Want to try it yourself? Head to Qr Studio and upload a menu photo. No credit card needed.

I'd love to hear your feedback — especially if you're a restaurant owner or fellow indie hacker building something in this space.

What problem are you solving for small businesses right now?
