From Procrastination to Productivity: What 2023 Taught Me
This is how my 2023 went down, and let me tell you, I'm not exactly thrilled with how I spent my time this year. But hey, I picked up some pretty valuable nuggets of wisdom along the way!
Lesson #1: Don't let today's discipline and productivity fool you into thinking you're invincible. One moment of weakness can send you spiraling into the black hole of procrastination and other bad habits. It's like trying to juggle flaming torches while walking on a tightrope – one slip and you're toast!
Lesson #2: If freelancing is your gig, don't put all your eggs in the marketplace basket. Building a strong brand, reaching out to potential clients, keeping existing clients happy, upselling, and adding extra value are crucial for success.
Lesson #3: When launching a product, don't be a baboon caught off guard like me. Warm up your online presence by popping up on YouTube, Reddit, indie hacker, hacker news, LinkedIn, and start sharing your insights or showcasing your professional work.
Lesson #4: Perfectionism is a trap that eats away at your time, it's just a one-way ticket to Nowheresville. Instead of obsessing over every detail, identify your target customers, engage with them, launch something useful, and make use of readily available boilerplate codes from GitHub and other sources.
Lesson #5: Tech wizards, gather 'round! Don't get caught in the spell of perfect code architecture or obsess over hieroglyphic documentation too soon. Keep your focus on the big picture before getting lost in the weeds. Having the cleanest code, and the best architecture won’t help you get new customers if you’re starting from zero.
2023 was a bit of an 'oopsie' year for me, let's just say I failed spectacularly on all these points in 2023, and boy, did I learn my lesson.
But wait, there's more brace yourself! Let's take a quick look at some of my other glorious failures:
Failure #1: I wasted an embarrassing amount of time doing absolutely nothing productive. Procrastination became my middle name as I lost myself in anime marathons and endless chess matches. I'm pretty sure the chess grandmasters were starting to keep track of me!
Failure #2: Leaving my job to work on my startup didn’t go as planned. No clients acquired, no finished product launched, and I didn't even have a single conversation with a potential customer. Ouch!
Failure #3: I fed myself a buffet of laughable excuses:
- "Hey, let's keep the code open source. It might come in handy for job hunting if this venture crashes and burns." (Seriously? That's your top priority?)
- "It's totally fine to take it easy. I mean, I've worked so hard this past year." (And do what exactly? Ponder the world's problems while playing chess and watching anime?)
Failure #4: Even after leaving my job, I couldn't decide whether to fully commit to a freelancing agency or dive headfirst into the world of product startups. I never really lacing up my shoes tight enough to sprint down either path.
There you have it – a crash course in how not to 2023 brought to you by yours truly!
Moving to 2024 - fast forward:
January: Wrapping up all freelance gigs in December had me charged up for startup adventures without distractions. Discipline? Check. Work on Servcy? Oh yes. Looking for a sidekick cofounder was tough with no wins yet. Whoopsies! I forgot to chat with customers again—my bad! But hey, I did manage to wave my flag on LinkedIn Beach, Reddit Island, and Twitter Bay a few times. Could've been Captain Fantastic but ended up Captain Fair-Enough.
February: Discipline's back on the menu! Been reaching out – though people answering back is another tale. Rolled out the first feature and placed it on Product Hunt; response? Crickets. Need more oomph in my effort. Gotta admit, looking at others making skit videos and penning posts that go viral made me feel like I brought a butterknife to a swordfight.
And then comes March, oh boy! Faced with thoughts of crawling back to job-land or freelancing-ville for some sweet salary sugar—my brain was throwing a tantrum without it! But hey, my piggy bank's still full for now.
Here’s March staring me down: Time for Servcy to shake things up since Plan A attracted no crowd, and trying it alone was like climbing a mountain solo. New month, new game plan – if this doesn't fly, I’m switching gears to a fresh project.
