Amazing article... Was looking for this ... Thanks !!
Saw some traffic coming to my site from IH today & came-in to check the source post.
Thanks for posting this here!
Like the article mentions - I was a salaried techie for a decade before going solo (been 5+ years now). Happy to answer any Qs from my experiences so far on this.
Can totally identify with this. It's hard making the leap. There will always be self-doubt. Looks like you still fared better than most. Congrats on sticking with it through uncertainty.
Thanks.
Wrt - "Looks like you still fared better than most."
Yea - I definitely feel so.
But, in a world full of catchy MRR and valuations headlines - it becomes very difficult for indie hackers to keep remembering why they took the plunge. IMHO - anyone who achieves their respective goal (irrespective of whatever the revenue, traffic, etc stats are) - they are successful.
EDIT - Not against MRR, valuations, revenue or other metrics. I myself actively track a lot of relevant metrics. But, knowing the true north always helps. :)
The productivity thing is interesting. Every new entrepreneur seems to struggle with it in one way or the other. I found it hard to get out of the 9-5 mindset, but once I realised that the morning and evening are my most productive times, I started to take afternoons off. You just have to find what works for you.
Agree. 5+ years on - I still get itchy every once in a while questioning how productive my day / week was. I try to calm myself down by recalling how some empty days have helped me taking better decisions.
Great post! I really identify with this note because it can feel so good to be productive:
“Be okay to sit-back and contemplate about things. Act swiftly, but only after having taken a decision. But, until that happens, be okay to let the things stay at the back of the head for a few days. Leave empty days to look at the problems from a distance for a more rational decision-making. It’s okay to feel itchy about this in the short-term from the old habits.”
Are you on Mastodon? I’d like to follow you.
