I’ve spent the past year exploring how to get more visibility for my open source CMS project, Typemill. Like many solo developers, I tested everything, from media outreach and newsletters to social media and paid SEO tools. Most of it didn’t deliver much. Eventually, I turned to SEO, using a high-end AI-powered platform that promised optimized articles. The results? Mixed at best, and definitely not worth the price tag.
That experience led me to rethink my entire approach. Instead of chasing rankings with generic AI content, I built my own workflows using Typemill’s built-in SEO tools and AI integration. With filtered Google Search Console data, and prompt-based article analysis, I created a process that helps me improve content based on real data, without losing the human side of writing.
The biggest shift? I stopped writing articles for SEO. Now I write based on what truly interests me and what I think might help others. I still use SEO tools, but as a support, not the starting point. In a world flooded with auto-generated content, I believe the best strategy is to stay personal, stay honest, and just blog like it’s 2005.
