From Slack to Discord - 13 months later in a growing startup

As a growing tech startup, we share our experience using Discord over Slack. This is our third post and I hope you will find it useful if you also consider moving over Slack to Discord.

In a nutshell, you should consider using Discord if:

  • You prefer to communicate vocally over texting with your team.
  • You are building a community-driven product.
  • You don't need third-party integrations - like Slack apps.

Here is my feedback article 13 months later: https://www.qovery.com/blog/feedback-from-slack-to-discord-13-months-later

I have one question if you are using Discord for your startup - How do you securely manage collaborators' access to your private section? Do you have any tool to auto-set permissions to specific users?

Read your post in more detail. regarding SSO I think you can do a bot that users will write and start authentication flow. e.g. bot sends a unique link to DM, to the site where they as authenticated user confirm linking their app account to the discord user. That works fine for makerlog in telegram, I think it should be fine in Discord too, but I have yet to write my first Discord bot.

Heroku does it for their CLI. So this approach is not new. Yes, there is some tech work involved, but that should work.

You made me curious about this topic, if i find time to implement such a thing I’ll try to remember to let you know.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts and concerns.

I really think that discord is way better option is your server is a somewhat community. Even if not community, but if you are not ready to pay for every user slack account - Discord is the way to go.

I don’t particularly like how slack threads work and generally I don’t like slack at all. It is one huge mess for me and I never know who wrote me and where and if I read the message I am always lost and don’t know how to get back to it.

Voice communications are awesome, really. The need to setup a meeting just to “hey, i really need your thoughts on this or that” or just hang out together while working with an option to turn off the mic and not actively participate in conversation that is happening. Helps to stay sane in WFH/lockdown times.

    Hey.

    Maker of https://appliku.com/ here.

We are 2 person company and we don’t need much of a user management yet.

But surprisingly I was thinking about making certain changes later which would include paid-only users support channel for example (we have free plan on our app). In that case I would probably duct tape something on our app. But that’s the developer in my speaking. Curious if you find anything.
