From total disaster to 200+ paying customers: A story of pivoting when $#!t hits the fan πŸ˜…

Got a story that might help if you're going through a rough patch with your project.

In Early 2023, my co-founder and I are excited about our Twitter automation platform. Things are looking good, we are ready with our MVP and planning new features, and then... BAM! πŸ’₯

Elon drops the API pricing bomb: $50k/month!!!

I still remember staring at my screen, thinking, "Well... we're f*cked." 🫠

We considered shutting down. Like, what's even the point now? Two months of depression and "what do we do now?" conversations followed. We tried a few different ideas, but nothing clicked.

Then, we stumbled onto carousel posts. We'd been creating them for our own marketing, honestly. It was a pain. Every. Single. Time.

So we thought, "Hey, what if..."

Fast forward to today:
β€’ 23,000+ signups
β€’ 200+ paying customers
β€’ Growing every day

But it wasn't all sunshine and rainbows:

β€’ When we launched paid plans in May (after 6 months of free beta), day one: zero sales. Day two: zero sales. I was ready to call it quits (yeah, it sounds a bit dramatic πŸ˜‚)
β€’ Had 15,000 free users at launch, and NONE converted immediately. Talk about a gut punch!
β€’ Spent countless hours commenting on posts, sharing tips, building in public - basically doing everything except crying in public (came close, though)

The game-changer? Building In Public. Seriously, the community support was INSANE. Every time we shared our struggles or wins, people showed up. They tried the product, gave feedback, and shared it with others.

What I learned (and wish I knew earlier):

  1. When stuff breaks, take a breath. That first reaction is usually panic - don't make decisions then
  2. Your first pivot idea probably isn't your best one (we went through 3-4 before carousels)
  3. Communities are EVERYTHING. r/SaaS and r/SideProject folks helped us so much!
  4. "Build it, and they will come" is BS. You gotta hustle, engage, share, help others
  5. Free users converting to paid takes time - don't freak out on day one (like I did πŸ˜…)

For anyone facing similar "everything is falling apart" moments:
β€’ It's normal to feel like giving up
β€’ Take time to process (but not too much)
β€’ Talk to your users/community
β€’ Sometimes, the best ideas come from your own pain points
β€’ Keep building, keep sharing, keep helping others

Would love to hear your pivot stories! Does anyone else have an "Elon broke my app" moment? πŸ˜…

It has been a year since we launched our platform, PostNitro, and we are still hustling. Check it out, and don't forget to share your feedback; it will help us grow.
