What does it need to get featured on the frontpage of HN? I never used it, do you have some advice?

Hi Felix, to be honest, I just posted the link. I didn't have too many points (6) and didn't share the link anywhere. So, maybe it is just something that people find interesting.

Two of my blog posts [0][1] hit the frontpage this year. One with 378 points, one with 1158 points.

One, it's a crapshoot. I posted 3 other articles of mine. One dipped its toes onto the frontpage, and the others were completely ignored.

Two, nobody wants to read your article. But they do want to have an interesting discussion about a topic. For both of my blog posts, it's difficult to find someone in the comments actually referencing something that I wrote.

Three, it helps if someone who's HN-famous posts it. I don't think that you can control this. I just happened to get lucky.

Four, seriously, it's a crapshoot. At any given moment, hundreds of articles are vying for 30 slots. If it doesn't work, just try something else. There are tons of other places to post content.

[0] Why are we so bad at software engineering?. I posted this to Reddit, where it blew up and was cross-posted to HN.

[1] DuckDuckGo is good enough for regular use. The poster is HN-famous and follows me on Twitter.

Thinking about this a little more, maybe the title is really important. I imagine if it would get the same attention if I had put the title "Show HN: Web Data Render", instead of "This website is valid JSON", which communicates exactly the idea.

Congrats Gustavo, Breathtaking numbers, I read your post in HN. What you've done is something unique and innovative. Well deserved.

    Congrats on your Show HN!

This is a really cool hack of the browser rendering process 😉

HN folks are almost always brutal. Could give a very normal person anxiety attacks if asked to showcase their app on HN.

    1. 1

I like the brutal comments. The most precious thing you have is time. These comments are a reality check. Fortunately, all the negative comments missed the point really bad and with weak reasoning. This made me even more excited about the idea. If it was something that makes me think that maybe my idea is not good, it is doing a huge favor, because time is precious.

Of course, you don't need to be a jerk to criticize, but if you check HN will not accept jerks either.

      1. 2

Like they say, haters are just fans in a different direction. So, there's absolutely all the more reason to get excited about your idea.

Dang! That's a lot of traffic. Just never read the comments :-P People on HN are friggin brutal.

    1. 1

Interesting, I enjoyed the comments a lot. A lot of good ideas and I felt a generally positive vibe. The negative ones missed the point terribly.

      1. 1

I don’t get why the negative ones have to be such tools.

If they don’t like it, they don’t have to use it. Geez.

        1. 1

I like the negative comments (see my comment above), but I agree with you that you don't need to be a jerk to do that.

        2. 1

Well, HN was created to gratify intellectual curiosity, so the comment box is really their way of complaining that your content was not interesting enough to them.

If you think of it that way, can’t really blame them 🙃.
