How I found the motivation to finish a side project by setting constraints and focusing during the pandemic. Now it funds my son's college account.

Love this story. And this is such a key takeaway: By focusing on a small goal, for once I was able to ship and deliver a small revenue-generating app. It just goes to show how small steps can make a big impact.
I also love this approach: I swallowed my pride and made an app for an existing category that I thought was totally oversaturated with solid high review apps. - a profitable product doesn't need to be a revolutionary product.
I'm curious, though - what is the app? Are you confident it will continue to be relevant 17 years from now?

What exactly was your product and how did you decide to build it? what was the process like? You skipped through this interesting information pretty quickly in the blog.
I'm glad for your success, but you say you shipped the app in a few weeks --> was there anything you did in particular that allowed you to 1) find an idea quick 2) build the app 3) what tech stack were you using 4) how were the shopify dev docs?

As a non american, can you explain why there is such a thing as a "college fund" ? why not save money into a single big pool and then use it as you see fit ?
The main reason to use a 529 plan ( college fund ) is the tax benefits. There is both a tax write off of up to $4,000 per year on what you put in, in certain states, and you don't have to pay taxes on the gains when you withdrawal later. However, there are downsides to a 529 which is flexibility of what you can use the funds for or who can transfer them to without penalty, which is why many prefer simply to save money in a regular brokerage account as you mentioned. I personally do both.
