At first I didn't get the point. It seemed like a more fun version of Zoom.

But if you keep Gather open in one of your browser tabs, it actually solves a really interesting problem in that it lowers the friction of getting in touch.

For example, if you want to call someone by phone or Zoom, you usually have to do a lot of administrative work: planning ahead, coordinating schedules, etc. But with some people, like your coworkers, you want to be able to just pop in and talk business really quickly — and I mean talk, not text — and then pop out. Like in a physical office.

Gather allows this. But it takes some boundary setting upfront.
