Generating hype through scarcity. Can I make it work?

Recently I decided to create a Discord server to move the users of my website/community from social media pages to a place where I can really be in control.

I started testing if enough people were interested with a poll on my Linkedin page and, despite the awful performance of LinkedIn polls (never use them for a page), I got signs of great interest from my community:

Today I have already announced that we will have a Discord server, that it will be invitation only for a while and then I told people to sign up to my newsletter to get an invite.

That worked pretty well as in the last few hours I got more signups than I normally get in a week!

My plan is to start to invite 50-100 people every week for a couple of months and then make the server public.

Generating hype through scarcity seems a tactic that could work in this case.
My only concern is that I am not Google and my current reach is < 5-10K people.

Do you think I can still make this work with a modest starting number like that?

sure! this sounds like it'll work but eventually you'll have to figure out where you all are headed... what's the mission and shared objective?

that's going to be the thing that keeps folks around... for a long time instead of just showing up for job postings... right?

Sure, keeping the community active and engaged will be a challenge on its own, but I hope that a mix of initial push from my end and an organic growth will help to keep the discussions going (and useful).
