Getting back to running after a 5 year break! What are your tips?

Hi Indie Hackers!

Who are the runners in this group?

I used to love running because it calmed my mind. I want to get back into it.

What are your tips for beginners?

Just make sure to make that first step outside your door. It doesn't matter if you run 1k or 10k, just make sure to have stepped outside. 😊 The reason I say this is because it's too easy to make an excuse for not taking that first step.

I've gotten back into running recently and I've had 2 week streaks occasionally of running every day, just by having taken that one step. Some days are good (non-stop running), some days are bad (need to walk) but definitely get out there!

Great advice Mario! Really helped this morning when I didn't feel like going for a run

    1. I always found that my runs always went WAY better if I ran the first mile well below my average pace.
    2. It is perfectly ok to run -> walk -> run -> walk
    3. Music always helped me find the strength in the hardest parts of my run
    4. Take your time in finding the shoes and gear that works for you.

I can't upvote this particular comment enough. I feel like these are the 4 most important tips.

If you like/want music, get a good sports-ready Bluetooth headset. The saltwater that is your sweat can get into a more typical set of, say, Apple Airpods and destroy them.

If you have audio and would like coaching, consider the Nike Running Club app, which is free and has podcast-like narrated runs of varying lengths (in time or distance) that give you coaching. It has changed my running game into something more sustainable.

Thanks Blake! Your advice really helped me finish my run today :)

Great job! 🎉 was it fun?

Yes, it was! It was only my 3rd run, so I ran for a minute, and walked for a minute for 5km.

Thanks for the tips Jason! Helped me a lot with my run today. :)

I got into running via ParkRun (https://www.parkrun.com/). It's great for motivation, meeting people and I get it helps my mental health by providing an opportunity to identify with and volunteer to support something bigger than myself.
It's a run, not a race, so walking is fine and something I did a lot of until I built up some endurance.
Oh, and t-shirts. You can earn a snazzy t-shirt! I've earned a red and a black, and my 2020 pre-COVID19 goal was a green one.

Park run sounds awesome! Turns out there's a group that meets really close to where I live. Thanks for sharing that! :)

Run slow! I started running on the treadmill and only ran really fast paces and hated running. Then one day it was sunny, and I went outside... Now I run as often as possible - always outdoors - and 9-10 min pace, and it's one of my favorite activities.

Thanks Daniel! I listened to your advice and ran at a 9 min pace for 5km. It took me longer (50 minutes), but I wasn't wheezing and breathing heavily like during my previous run.

That's awesome! And hopefully you enjoyed the run which is def the secret to running a lot! And maybe you were able to enjoy the birds and the things around you, which is so great for mental health :)

I did enjoy it. Towards the end, I was in some sort of flow. It felt good.
I’m not fit enough to run the whole way yet, so I run for a minute, then walk for a minute.
As for the birds, I was too focused on not quitting to notice them. 😅 I’m sure as I get fitter, I’ll start noticing my surroundings more.

I've been running 5k every now and then. I'm a beginner as well. Started with less than 2k and was almost dead. Then, gradually, improved resistance and also learned to breath calmly, paid more attention how my feet hit the ground and also cycling a bit to have better resistance.

What's been helping me as well? Running on the grass, which causes less impact on feet/ankles

I tried 2km the other day and I almost died too 😅 Thanks for the tips Leo!

Been thinking of getting back into it as well. Head out at night when fewer people are out, get some exercise in. "Couch 2 5K" helped a lot when I got started, I'll probably use it again. If you want something similar but with a more-fun theme, check out "Zombies, Run!" It's the same intermittent training but with a "running away from zombies" theme and story.

Thanks Dan! That zombie run sounds fun! I’ll check it out.

I'm a runner, albeit a slow one. I took it up a few years ago as my hips were in bad shape. Might have something to do with 5 kids 😬. I also had SPD (excessive loosening of pelvis) during many of my pregnancies.

Mostly I've stuck to 5k runs, no more, no less, bar a few occassions. One time I decided to run a half marathon distance. I almost died, lol.

More recently I decided to run with barefoot shoes too, that's probably partly why I find it tougher, but it feels like the right thing to do. 🤷🏽‍♀️

I haven't been doing it so much recently, I really need to get back into it. I've been doing walks instead, my hips are feeling the strain atm :(

Thanks for sharing your experience, Rosie! I’m very slow too 😅

I do daydream a lot! Haha! Thanks for the awesome tip! Today I counted backwards from 10 repeatedly while running for a minute and walking for a minute. Managed to finish without stopping :)
