Not sure if this is intention, but if you add a product on IH and create a milestones that happened in the past, you can get a points for them.
I discovered this when I added my product, and added older milestones to document the project flow from the beginning. At least some things that I find meaningful. My points were rising and I wondered from where they come from. Apparently you can Like your milestone (it's automatically), and that brings points.
Maybe it is too relevant, but having in mind IH have some purpose for those points, this is the way it can be misused.

you get points whenever someone upvotes your reply or the post you made.
In general - providing valuable content means more people would upvote it. However, lack of upvotes doesn't mean the content is not valuable (just for your expectations)
