Hey Indie Hackers! ๐
Iโm super excited (and a little nervous!) to finally share something Iโve been building quietly for the past few months โ RetroGames for Windows ๐ฎ๐น๏ธ
RetroGames for Windows is a curated launcher that brings together classic arcade, DOS, and 90s PC-style games in one clean, nostalgic package for Windows users.
I grew up playing pixelated side-scrollers, text-based adventures, and games that came on floppy disks. Now that Iโm older (and permanently glued to a modern laptop), I missed the feeling of just opening a game and playing, without logins, patches, or 10-minute updates.
So I built it.
โ Minimalist retro-style launcher (lightweight and zero bloat)
๐ฎ Comes preloaded with open-source and abandonware classics
๐น๏ธ Gamepad & keyboard ready
๐ ๏ธ Built using Python + Electron + a sprinkle of SDL2
๐พ No installs, just unzip and play!
I wanted something fun to work on outside my day job, and I was burned out from โbig startup ideas.โ So I returned to what I actually loved: games, nostalgia, and simplicity.
Also โ this is my way of introducing younger generations to the magic of Commander Keen, Digger, and Alley Cat ๐
Gamers who grew up in the 80s/90s and want a nostalgia hit
Teachers/parents who want safe, simple games for kids
Developers looking for pixel-perfect design inspiration
Anyone who loves retro aesthetics or tiny games that just work
I plan to launch a "modding kit" so people can add their own retro games
Looking into portable Linux version (Steam Deck maybe?)
Eventually a small "RetroGames Store" for indie creators of old-school games
Download and check it out here ๐ [download link here]
I'd love to hear your feedback โ especially if:
Youโve tried similar retro tools
You have a favorite old game I should include
You just want to talk about pixel art, CGA graphics, or Duke Nukem ๐
Thanks for reading, IH fam!
Happy to answer questions, and Iโd be thrilled if you gave RetroGames a spin.
