Getting traffic in the beginning

Recently I've found forums, communities and groups like this to be the best way to connect with the people that will help drive traffic to your site. Don't just start posting links to your website (that won't work). But don't be afraid to post a link if you genuinely feel it's relevant.

I'd go and read the Perrenial Seller by Ryan Holiday. He lays out the process for creating a business that generates referrals and last a lifetime. I think too often (especially in the bullshit VC startup world) businesses are set up to make quick money and then get out. IH feels different. People are here to create proper businesses without funding.

Get your name out into the specific communities that contain the audience you think will buy your product and then ensure the product is so valuable to them that they share it with all of their friends.

If you want specific tactics, you can Google that and get an answer in seconds. But if I were you, I'd go down the forum route.

It's definitely not as easy as in the "old days". Digital marketing has become so over-optimized that it can be tough.

If you want pretty decent traffic, Twitter CPC is pretty good.

We publish a list of places where a startup can have a presence online .. a lot of these will also provide backlinks to your site:

You can then change the country if you are located somewhere else (or choose software company for some more options).

Focus on the most important services first such as the major social media channels and if possible start generating ratings and reviews that can help you rank better on some services and make it easier for potential users to choose your product over competitors.

Also make sure you submit your site to Google Webmaster tools and make sure a good portion of your pages are indexed, add every variation of your domain (www and not etc).

You should also write some blog posts with good content focused on your niche and make content available on other services such as linkedin and others.
