Well this couldn't be better timed. Thank you for this! What about pre-launch? Any recommendations there, or just attack it with the tools you mentioned? http://www.stumbleapod.com is something I've been developing, but it's prelaunch and I'm interested in doing some potential user interviews to stay on the right track and build a little buzz before launch.
Haha awesome! When you're launching, I would mainly save that for ProductHunt/HackerNews.
For a pre-launch however, I strongly recommend posting around in some of the subreddits I linked (as well as other ones that fit your product's niche). In essence, since you're building a tool for Podcasts, you could post it in r/podcasts. You'll find a handful of users that'll share their thoughts with you on Reddit alone. Feel free to post it on SideProjects.net as well ;)
Also be sure reach out to your connections (friends, family, co-workers, etc.) that listen to podcasts and have them use your tool and see what they think.

Thanks for the list @sakun! I saw you have "Podcast" as a general medium on the list. I'd like to show SmashNotes.com to you, as a way to not just have a podcast, but to create, share and promote the content from within.
For example, will success at your job make you happy as advice from Justin Kan, or how and why did @mijustin meet his cofounder for Transistor.fm - questions like these and many more.
Any podcaster could sign up (DM me) and we'll set them up with an account to create these segments. They are then sharable anywhere on the web, embeddable into blogs, and auto-play on Twitter.

But unfortunately, using them doesn't mean 500 users or even 5.

I don't know if I'd term it as your products not being good enough, but the number of conversions you get is highly dependent on whether or not your product is something people can see themselves using. You're right though. None of this is a guarantee but the resources I linked are where you can still source your first users.
You could definitely post around in some of the different subreddits I linked so that you could seek validation on your products (that's generally what I did before launching on ProductHunt/HackerNews) :P
