I did an interview for ConvertKit a year or two ago where they hired a professional photographer to snap some photos. They uploaded the photos to Unsplash, and since then I've seen them all over the web, including on a few very big sites. For example, check out the bottom of Teachable's Features page.
Obviously there are millions of photos on Unsplash, but it's basically just a tag-based search engine. If you niche down with your tags, I bet you can end up with your photos ranking well for lots of long-tail queries.
Given Getty Image's aggressive copyright enforcement activities I wouldn't touch Unsplash with a pole.
They will remain as a separate brand.

Definitely. They are eradicating competition and going to make it more like GettyImages.
In few years we won't even hear the name Unsplash as we do now. This is going to be end of the Unsplash as we know.
