They exist because companies can extract optionality without obligation. A role can stay posted indefinitely; a candidate cannot. So hope floats in a digital vacuum—résumés becoming masks and inventory, like a Halloween or fireworks store.
Silence becomes a feature of the system. From the boss chair, the employer side, this is oh so rational and human. From the candidate side, it feels like erosion. Both can be true. If you've applied to roles that never closed, never replied, never existed in any meaningful sense—you weren't unlucky. You were interacting with a system optimized for optionality, not resolution.
Question: How many of the jobs you applied to this year do you think were ever meant to be filled?
Stop guessing which postings are real and start scoring them. Last/JobScout’s BS/Scout system flags likely ghost and low‑trust listings before you waste time, so your limited energy goes to roles that were actually meant to be filled.
