Gmail gives access to your email — but not much real control

While working on a side project recently, I spent a lot of time inside Gmail’s export and backup options.

What surprised me is how big the gap is between access and control.

You can read everything in Gmail, but when you actually want to:
– export specific emails
– search across years in a structured way
– back things up so you can restore or reuse them later

…the default options don’t really help.

Takeout gives you massive archives.
Many tools either need full access or work in bulk.
And once emails are archived, searching or restoring later can be awkward.

It made me rethink the assumption that “email is safe as long as it’s in Gmail”.

Curious how others here handle this:
– Do you back up Gmail at all?
– If yes, how often and in what format?
– Has anyone actually had to restore emails years later?
