Goal: get first paying user (day 31)

Yesterday:

Big lesson learned. A couple of days ago I made a big change to the landing page. The previous one had a "good" conversion rate. For every ~50 users that came into the site 2/3 registered. But the message wasn't clear enough and the main feature of the app wasn't at the front and center. So I changed it.

I was happy about the design but still unsure if the message was clear enough. When I posted it to IH I got 3/4 bad reviews. People were saying they didn't understand the message and it was very frustrating. So I went ahead and started changing texts. Again the feedback from the community was bad.

Yesterday I thought I would look at the analytics for the landing page to see what the users were doing and to my surprise, after the first change (the one I thought had been a failure) 2/3 times more users tried to register to the app.

So the lessons learned were:

  1. Analytics > Individuals. Opinions are incredibly important but I can't make decisions again based on the opinions of 2/3 people and not take into consideration what the big amount of people are doing. I will still pay close attention to what people have to say but I won't rush into making changes before seeing the big picture.
  2. Have good analytics. When I tried to follow the steps the users were taking after seeing the landing page I realized Hotjar wasn't recording heatmaps and I was using Google Analytics for the landing page but Amplitude for the app which made it really hard to reconstruct where the users were leaving. I installed Woopra yesterday to keep track of different user journeys across the landing page/app.
  3. Identify exactly where the users are leaving. I initially thought I didn't have signups because the landing page was "worst" but I then realized that the main problem was that the signup is too long/too hard to complete. My energies should have been there instead of changing the landing page even more.

So for today, my goal is to complete the setup of Woopra and improve the signup flow. I will then start working further on the app.
