Good pricing strategy?

Ok there I was Bing:ing around the Internet Explorer looking for an e-commerce solution suitable for the JAMStack.

Thanks to great content marketing I found this service.. let's call it Service X.

Browsed around their website & looked at the docs.

It was love at first impression.

The price? Estimated to $35/month + a free trial. Nice.

Not as cheap as Shopify - buuuuut with this sort of flexibility I could do SOOO much more.

It would only require lots of dev-hours. My dev-hours.

(Hey.. dev-hours are totally free when it's your spare-time and hobby, right?! 😃)

Many late nights later I was close to wrapping up this awesome new project.

And then:

Me:
"Just going to double check my previous pricing estimat... wait. What. Wtf is this: 'Starting at $1,995/month'. This couldn't be.. Wait. What."

Minimum $2k/month for hosting my tiny new e-commerce? This can't be.

I was so confused.
Did I really miss that tiny bit of crucial info in my research?

After getting the new pricing confirmed by one of their team members I was absolutely devastated.

It's crazy how devastated I was. And still am.

The craziest part is how deeply in love I fell for this service to begin with:

  • I commented their YouTube-videos just to tell them I love them
  • I recommended it to other developers
  • I recommended it to one of my startup's Angel investor
  • I even talked about it to my girlfriend?!?!

So here I am with a worthless (but totally awesome) e-commerce.

Starting from scratch once again.

Got any recommendations?
