Google AI Overviews and LLM search are not the same problem

I've been researching this while building Bonai, launch infrastructure for early-stage founders: domain, site, and a content system that builds SEO and AI visibility from day one, with a weekly audit loop to keep it compounding. The more I dug in, the more I realized most of the advice out there conflates two systems that actually work very differently. Here's what I found.

Google AI Overviews run on Google's index.

To show up, your page needs to already rank in roughly the top 35 organic results. Domain authority matters. Backlinks matter. A brand new site is at a disadvantage no matter how good the content is. What Google selects from your page is a passage, not the whole article. The first two sentences of each section need to answer the question directly, before any context or setup.

LLM search (Perplexity, ChatGPT) works differently.

Perplexity does live retrieval every time. It searches the web, pulls passages, cites sources. A newer site with tight, well-structured content can show up even without domain authority. ChatGPT is more complicated: the base model draws from training data, but paid users in 2026 get live browsing by default. Either way, what matters beyond your own site is how often your brand shows up *elsewhere*. Reddit threads, directories, comparison articles, community posts. That's the training signal and the retrieval signal at the same time.

The thing both systems share:

Passage-level structure. H2s written as questions. Sections that open with a direct answer. Content that stands alone without needing the paragraphs around it. Get that right and you're better positioned for both.

What's actually different:

For Google AI Overviews, rank first, then optimize for selection. For LLM search, think about external coverage before you think about your own content. Where does your brand show up outside your site?

For most indie hackers, the LLM search path is more accessible early on. You don't need domain authority. You need to be present in the places LLMs learn from.

Still early with Bonai so would love to hear what's actually been working for you on this front.
