Google PageRank Is Gone. But Should We Forget a Domain’s History?

Remember when Google PageRank was the SEO metric everyone talked about?

That little green bar in the Google Toolbar gave website owners a quick way to judge a domain’s perceived authority.

Google officially discontinued the public PageRank Toolbar in 2016. Since then, SEO professionals have relied heavily on third-party metrics such as Moz Domain Authority (DA) and Ahrefs Domain Rating (DR).

But there’s an interesting question:

What if a domain’s historical authority still tells us something valuable?

When evaluating expired domains, aged websites, or potential link opportunities, looking only at a modern authority score can leave out part of the story.

That’s why I built a free Google PageRank Checker for SERPSpur.

The tool lets you check available legacy PageRank history and compare it with a modern signal: SERPSpur Trust Rate.

What is Trust Rate?

Trust Rate isn't designed to replace PageRank, DA, or DR.

Instead, it provides a current perspective by considering signals such as:

Backlink quality
Referring-domain diversity
Content relevance
Current SERP signals
The overall quality of the domain's link profile

The interesting part is seeing historical authority vs. current reality.

For example, an expired domain may have an impressive historical PageRank record but currently be filled with irrelevant or low-quality links.

On the other hand, a newer domain may have little or no historical PageRank but demonstrate strong current trust signals.

That's why I believe context matters more than a single SEO metric.

Who can use it?

This can be particularly useful for:

🔎 Expired-domain research
🔗 Link-building and outreach
🌐 Domain acquisition research
📊 SEO competitor analysis
🛡️ Evaluating potential backlink opportunities

Instead of asking:

"Does this domain have a high authority score?"

You can ask:

"What did this domain look like historically, and what does it look like today?"

I built it to make that comparison quick and accessible.

No complicated workflow. Just enter a domain and investigate its history.

What do you think—does historical PageRank still have value when evaluating domains in 2026?
