Submitted my CV tool to AlternativeTo this morning. Rejection came back within
hours: they don't accept apps "restricted to or targeted at a specific
geographical area". Too local. Too domestic.
Fair enough, their site, their rules. But it got me thinking, because the UK
focus is the entire reason the product works.
I'm building Sausage Dog (sausagedog.io). You upload your CV, paste a UK job
advert, and it rewrites your CV for that specific role without inventing
anything. Your dates, employers and qualifications stay exactly as they are.
I started it because I was applying for jobs myself and could see the game
had changed: every application needs to be bespoke now, and that punishes
people who are great at their jobs but hate writing about themselves.
The global players in this space treat the UK as a font change. Meanwhile CVs
here aren't resumes, NHS and Civil Service applications have their own rules
entirely (Success Profiles are a world of their own), and the advice
jobseekers get is mostly imported from the US and quietly wrong.
Being UK-only also means I can do things the big tools can't. I've been
collecting live data from UK job boards, tracking adverts hourly. One finding:
a fresh receptionist advert has a median of 21 applicants, a staff nurse
advert has 1. The jobs everyone calls "easy to get" have the longest queues.
That kind of research only works because I stayed narrow.
So the directory sees "too local". I see a moat that a global competitor
would have to burn years to copy.
Curious what others here think. Anyone else doubled down on a market that
platforms and directories treat as too small? Did staying narrow pay off,
or did the ceiling eventually hurt?
Hey Anthony — saw Sausage Dog , congrats on the launch. I checked the homepage and noticed your comparison table (vs ChatGPT/Jobscan) isn't rendering any visible marks in the cells — worth checking it renders properly across browsers, since a broken comparison table undercuts a strong differentiator. I do focused UX audits for early-stage SaaS (prioritized report, no fluff). Building case studies right now — $3 instead of my usual $19. Want me to send a full one over?
I'm curious what convinced you being UK-only is a durable advantage rather than simply a narrower starting point.
From the people you've spoken with, do they choose Sausage Dog because it understands UK hiring conventions better, or because they trust a specialist more than a general-purpose CV tool?
I think it's both to be honest, but the product has become better because it's UK only, not despite it.
A UK CV isn't just an American résumé with different spelling. NHS recruitment, Civil Service Success Profiles, local qualifications, apprenticeship routes, public sector hiring, and even the language employers use are all completely different country to country.
Staying focused has also let me build things that don't scale globally. I've analysed thousands of live UK job adverts and published first-party research from that data. That research has been picked up by HR Press and has started earning backlinks and credibility that a generic "AI CV builder" probably wouldn't.
I could hopefully expand internationally one day. But I'd rather be the best solution for one market than the maybe 20th best solution for every market.
Appreciate the context.
The focus behind the UK-only decision is interesting.
Would be good to continue the conversation outside the thread.
