Growing a newsletter about newsletters

Growing a newsletter about newsletters

Jakob here 🖐

In my newsletter Fake Mayo I share weekly stories (interviews) of how founders got their first customers.

This story is about Daniel Roman. He runs a newsletter called The Newsie

  • Started in the summer of 2023
  • A few months to the first 100 subscribers

A former Canadian government employee in data collection, Daniel now works for WooSender, a SaaS company specializing in email and SMS solutions for business growth.

Inspired by his work, Daniel launched The Newsie in 2023 as a weekly newsletter focused on email marketing and newsletter strategies.

To reach his first 100 subscribers, Daniel used multiple promotion strategies on X, embedding links in his bio and posts, and sending personalized DMs. He also cross-promoted through LinkedIn’s newsletter platform, which notifies followers about new releases.

By sharing content from The Newsie on LinkedIn with a link back to his website, he attracted additional subscribers.

Daniel experimented with paid growth through Beehiiv, investing $2.50 per new subscriber, with high open rates of 40-60%.

He’s now planning to expand his audience by creating content on YouTube, tapping into the platform's popularity as a search engine for learning email marketing strategies.

how hard is it to grow a newsletter from scratch? I think I should be good enough about something to start talking about it.

I find it quite hard - haven't found the silver bullet to marketing just yet. I started out my newsletter Fake Mayo early 2024. It's a side hustle but I'm currently only at 300+ subscribers.

One piece of advice. Just start out getting subscriptions. For starters you don't even have to publish anything. Just set up a landing page and find out if there is a demand for your topic.

Well, the process is the same as any sales pipeline. You'll need a good flow of leads and a way to convert them into newsletter subscribers. How you get that comes down to preference.

One popular method today is using SEO to drive traffic to a blog and then prompt visitors to subscribe. Writing blog posts about topics you intend to cover in the newsletter is also a good way to gauge interest in that topic. You can also turn old newsletters into blog posts.

So yeah, create a blog. Or try marketing on social media. You'll need followers/visitors to turn them into subscribers.

Using Reddit itself got me many users. If you share valuable posts, they like it. I think he will do well there.

Thanks Matin - I'm looking into Reddit. But it seems that the community is quite sensitive to selfpromotion 🙂
