I've been lurking IH and other sites with like-minded people (e.g. PH) so I've been able to read a lot about how to grow a product which solves a particular problem (often a rather technical problem). This is exactly where I am at home: I'm a developer with rather limited knowledge about marketing or social media.
Recently, howver, I created a website where people can share and discuss fan theories: https://poptheories.com/
I did it mostly for the hell of it to learn some front-end frameworks but also because I disliked the fact that there wasn't a central place to discuss fan theories with proper categorization, votes, etc. Now that it's finished I have gotten some good feedback on it, although very limited, simply because I have no clue how to get people to know about this type of product.
I have no clue if IH is the place to ask about this type of product, but IH and similar places is all I know, so I figured I could try asking here. So have any of you had any experience in growing a product which is not exactly a solution to anything, and which is aimed not at the technical crowd you usually hang around with?
A social product like this is usually harder to market than a product that solves obvious technical problems unless you can create large enough buzz. Nevertheless, I would try two things:
These kinds of materials might be useful for guest posting as well. If you want to be bold, pitch these "listing" ideas to some journalist at Buzzfeed, and like, and they might write it for you. You have to be relentless to promote your theories and sites wherever you can.
Thanks for the reply! Those are exactly the type of ideas I was looking for. Especially the second point is rather helpful. Something which I had not thought of yet.
