When I started StartupMap Africa, it wasn’t because I had a grand plan to build a “platform.”
It came from something much simpler: every time I raised money, I rebuilt the same investor list from scratch.
I assumed I was the only one doing this.
Turns out I wasn’t.
Over the past few weeks, I pushed a small landing page live with almost no promotion, and here’s what happened:
I wasn’t ready to launch, but people found the site anyway.
They browsed:
Startup pages
Investor directory
Event calendar
Funding opportunities
They spent real time exploring — long sessions, multiple page views.
That was the moment I realized: this actually solves a problem for people other than me.
Before I shared anything publicly, users were:
Opening investor profiles
Clicking funding opportunities
Looking at startup events
Saving pages from the calendar
The signal was clear: there’s demand for a simple, public way to navigate Africa’s startup ecosystem.
I built features based on my own pain points:
Directory of African startups
Directory of investors
2025–2026 events calendar
Funding opportunities
But watching the early analytics showed me which sections people care about first.
Founders go straight to investors and events.
Investors go straight to startups.
That helped me define the product’s focus:
Founders first, then investors.
I haven’t done structured user interviews (yet), but the organic behavior has been more useful than I expected.
Every visit tells me:
what matters
what’s confusing
what needs improvement
what deserves more attention
This is slowly shaping the roadmap.
I’m now preparing the public launch across:
Indie Hackers
Product Hunt
Startup communities
WhatsApp and Slack groups
Before that goes live, I’m refining:
Search and filtering
Startup submission flow
Event saving and email reminders
Country-level pages
The goal is simple:
Make it easy for anyone to discover who’s building what in Africa.
This project started as a private tool.
It’s becoming something bigger than I expected.
If you’d like to follow the journey, give feedback, or share what you’d want to see in the product — I’d appreciate it.
