Gumroad as an Iffy Problem – My Permanent Ban

I have been a Gumroad seller for a long time, and my experience had been mostly smooth. When I learned about their latest updates, I was excited. New features usually mean new opportunities. But this time, things took a sharp turn. Out of nowhere, I received an email:

Your account has been permanently banned from Gumroad

This was a big shock. Since August 2020, I had been selling a dataset listing the Top Shopify Stores Dataset, updated monthly. It’s a simple product (a spreadsheet or CSV file) that my customers use to conduct market research or enrich data about their own customers. All of a sudden, my business was at risk.

It wasn’t the first scare I had with Gumroad. On October 15th, 2024, I received an email saying my account was suspended. I was accused of violating Gumroad’s terms of service. I felt lost and confused. But, on October 24th, 2024, I received a second email saying my account was unsuspended. Oddly enough, I had done nothing to fix any supposed problem. Yet now, on December 11th, 2024, I got the worst email of all: a permanent ban.

All these emails came from iffy.com, which seems to be Gumroad’s new AI moderation tool. It feels strange. Would an AI tool really understand the nuance of each seller’s situation? One day, I was happily selling. The next, I was being shut down. This sudden move can destroy a business in a heartbeat. Strangely, even after the ban notice, I can still access my account. Maybe it’s a glitch. Maybe not. It’s hard to trust anything now.

An Alternative

The good news is that I had already started working on a backup plan. Instead of relying on Gumroad’s flat-file downloads, I began building RetailRank.com. By building a platform where users can browse and filter the dataset online, I’m able to provide a smoother, more complete user experience. Even if Gumroad were to lock me out, my customers can still enjoy all the features and insights they need.

Gumroad’s Future and AI Moderation

Gumroad’s recent move to become a merchant of record sounded like a promising step forward. I had hoped this would simplify my admin work. But how can anyone confidently build a business on a platform that can shut them down at any moment, without warning nor explanations?

It would be far more reasonable for Gumroad to give sellers a chance to address any issues before hitting them with a permanent ban. A simple warning email could go a long way. This would allow sellers to correct their mistakes and ensure compliance with the rules. Instead, the “ban hammer” drops too quickly.

Most importantly, never forget to back up your customer data. Keep a record of their emails and purchase history. If you lose access to Gumroad, you don’t want to lose your entire audience. After all, with AI moderation in place, you never know what message might appear in your inbox next. Better to be ready than sorry.
