Hacker-friendly alternatives to Twilio

I'm creating an MVP of an AI chatbot accessible only through WhatsApp. Twilio is being very annoying about buying a phone number, seems like they're very untrustring if you're not a traditional business with a website and the whole shabang. Are there any good alternatives that someone has used? I just want to buy a phone number, hook it up to WhatsApp for Business and receive/send messages through an API...

EDIT: Also, Twilio's JS SDK sucks so bad.. Anyone had experience with anything better?
