Had my first Investor Interview, here's my advice

Before jumping on this, I think first you need to know what I do right?

Who we are:
We are AlterEstate, a CRM for the real estate market segment that focuses on automating the sales process through a sales pipeline management methodology combined with a powerful website for LATAM.
Right now we are a team of 2 people only, we have over 200+ active paying customers and generate recurring revenues of 3.5k + monthly. I launched my first MVP 6 months ago.

As the title says, today I had my first interview with a potential investor.

To be honest, I know nothing about investment, equities or how to even put a value to my company, I'm just a regular guy that want to change the real estate market on LATAM, I never thought that this project would become what it's becoming today, so on my first investor meeting I was pretty blunt and transparent of everything, he first asked me about who I was and how did I ended up building this, and then he asked me to see the dashboard and why it was different than the competition.

He was impressed and he really liked the project, after the presentation, he asked me what I was looking for, I asked for $130k to cover 12 months of operation, in exchange he gets 15% of the company. Obviously he started asking in what I would invest that money and what was my plan to expand my operations to LATAM (we only operate right now in the Dominican Republic). Obviously I didn't get an answer right away but he gave me some advice on how to determine my company valuation, and questioned the idea of whether I really needed an investor to grow.

Before looking for investors have this clear:

  • In what are you going to expend the money
  • Have a clear and achievable path on how you are going to put that money to work.
  • Have your company valuation before asking for money, this will give you a clear view of how much you can ask and how much you are going to give.
  • Determine if you really need an Investor or a Partner, and by partner I mean someone that can help you achieve your main goal. For example in my case, is expand my operations to LATAM, for that, I don't really need an Investor to achieve it, I need someone (a partner for example) to connect me with the big owners of real estate companies in the countries I want to attack first.

Hope this helps you before having your first interview with a potential investor.

    Thanks for sharing this.

I would like to add one point here :

Do a background check of investors on Linkedin/ Angellist before sharing more details with them. Also, be wary of fraud investors.
