After earning his bachelor of engineering, Natapong began his career working at Chevron in Thailand, transitioning from drilling operations to supply chain management. It was in this role that he soon discovered how tools like Power BI can improve decision-making by presenting data in powerful, digestible ways.

This motivated him to move to Chicago and pursue a master's in data science. During his graduate studies, he had the opportunity to work at the Argonne National Laboratory under the U.S. Department of Energy. Collaborating. Alongside top researchers, Natapong was able to contribute to cutting-edge projects, and seeing his contributions published reinforced his passion for data engineering and its ability to solve complex challenges.

After earning his degree, Natapong joined CDL1000, a fast-growing Chicago startup, as a data engineer. There, he gained hands-on experience in data analytics and machine learning, working on innovative projects with teams around the world. He now leads large-scale initiatives in the design and implementation of impactful data solutions.

Optimizing Resource Efficiency with Docker Modernization

In one role, Natapong noticed that his team relied on outdated container environments that were consuming excessive resources and posing significant risks to security. This led to Natapong leading a comprehensive overhaul of the team's container infrastructure, including not only updating Docker images but also redefining their configurations to better align with modern security and performance standards. He also implemented automation strategies to keep them up-to-date without the need for manual intervention.

Natapong also optimized server utilization, significantly reducing the need for additional physical resources. This not only extended the lifecycle of containerized applications but reduced energy consumption and significantly lessened the organization's environmental impact.

Streamlining Deployment with GitHub Actions

The deployment of any code, system, or application can affect an entire organization --- especially if the deployment is inefficient. These inefficiencies have a way of cascading through an organization, and soon, everyone on staff sees the impact of the delays and wasted resources.

Natapong tackled this challenge by introducing GitHub Actions to automate complex deployment workflows. This involved the setting up of cloud-hosted runners (systems that run GitHub jobs), which reduced his team's reliance on energy-intensive, on-premises infrastructure. These workflows improved deployment speed and reliability, eliminating time-consuming manual processes and replacing them with error-free, streamlined automation.

Sustainable Scalability with Serverless Architectures

You can always add more infrastructure to meet rising demands, but it's not quite as simple to just disable some of it and avoid the waste of energy when the load isn't at its highest.

Natapong's solution for this was to design serverless architectures that would be capable of adjusting resources based on real-time demand, allowing the brand to eliminate overprovision and energy waste while still maintaining high performance during peak periods.

Utilizing energy-efficient data centers powered by renewable energy, this infrastructure proved to be both scalable and environmentally responsible. Furthermore, Natapong leveraged a pay-as-you-go model for this project, allowing his team to further optimize costs and work toward better sustainability.

Natapong is committed to advancing the field of data engineering --- beyond his work in the field itself. He's passionate about training the next generation of leaders in data, demonstrated by his work in judging hackathons and industry awards.

He's also authored research that includes his paper "Role of Cloud Computing & Artificial Intelligence in the Logistics & Supply Chain Industry," which highlights the transformative potential of AI and cloud technologies in achieving sustainability in logistics. His most recent work, "A Platform-Agnostic Approach in Cloud Security for Data Engineers," discusses how data engineers can keep information safe in the cloud without being locked into one specific tool, emphasizing the importance of universal security principles that help you handle threats across various cloud platforms.
