Has anyone built an affiliate software?

so the interwebs is full of all kinds of tutorials,how to's and clone projects for almost any software product out there. But when i try to find a guide or tutorial on how to create an affiliate platform all i get back are the actual products and guides on how to join and setup your affiliate program with various options. reason i'm looking into this is pure curiosity for what goes into coding one.
