Has anyone ever hired a freelance writer?

Hey everyone!

I've been looking to ramp up my blogging and content marketing efforts and would love to hear from anyone who's ever hired a freelance writer.

Do you have any tips on finding good writers? Is upwork the best place?

What's a good rate for a high quality article? (e.g. a 1000-word well researched article).

Is there anything else you'd recommend I keep in mind when hiring a freelance/content writer?

Thank you so much!

Hi @rohanm93, I've hired about a dozen writers over the past year. I just published a guide this week about what my process is:

Upwork is a good place to start because they handle a lot of the nitty gritty for you (invoicing, taxes, contracts). Once you get comfortable on Upwork, try hiring writers elsewhere. One place where I had lots of success was in the online job boards for US colleges in my area.

    Hi Rohan,

I actually did over 200 customer discovery interviews with SEO agencies who had to constantly find freelance writers. It seems like the current paradigm of finding writers is either through upwork or textbroker. It's stressful finding the right writer online, but it can definitely be done. However, expect to go through a few bad writers before finding the right writer. The current market rate is around 5 cents per word for mediocre writing, and 10 cents per word for relatively good writing. If you want to chat more I'd love to give you more details on what I have learned! You can also check out my startup to see if there are any collaboration opportunities, if not no worries!

    Best of luck!

Hey David! Thank you so much for getting back to me - your comments are so helpful.

I'd love to learn more! The 10c/word budget is okay if the writing is high quality - any tips regarding finding a good writer online? Thanks!
