Has anyone managed to get an article to go viral on Medium? If so, how did you do it?
I'm hearing great things about Medium as an excellent channel for content marketing, but I've yet to crack the code on it. Any help would be most welcome.

I did a couple of times. You need to get your article published in a publication (not very hard since they are always looking for new quality articles)... also, the article needs to be good.
Make sure you're very clear on your audience's goals and problems when you pick a topic (it's very much like doing research for building a product).
Write a rough draft quickly but then edit and edit and edit. My best article ended up being a 3rd the size of the original.
At the time I was reading On Writing Well and Made to Stick. In my editing I was very focused on clarity.

Thanks for this. Could you elaborate on what you mean by "get your article published in a publication"? Do you mean getting a publication to link back to the Medium article?
What I mean is submit your article to a publication (to the editor of the publication) instead of publishing it on your own Medium page.
So... your article would appear in https://towardsdatascience.com/ instead of medium.com/marc
To do this you need to write a great article and submit it to the publication. Check out the 'CONTRUBUTE' tab on towards data science as an example.

Also, this may all feel a bit nerve-wracking but the right way to think about it is this. Publications NEED good content. They even need bad content (it helps them with SEO). Many publications will accept anything. If you write a great article putting it in a publication will help it get the initial views it needs to take off + the publication is helping the Medium editorial team understand what's good and bad.
