Has anyone used a Viral loop to get more signups?

I have been looking at how I can get more people to sign up when I get ready to launch my landing page.

I read the below article on how creative market where able to get more users to sign up at the begining.

Has anyone used this tactic before, besides throwing cash at the problem, how would you get more sign ups, for your marketplace?
