Has your project ever been copied? Mine was!

A small story of copied project doodlepatterns.xyz

Let me be honest: I hate copycats. And I think as all of you.

Today a friend of mine sent me this screenshot of the project he found on the land-book website, and messaged me "Man, I see your project on the land-book :)".

Everything was good, except for the fact that it wasn't my project 🤣.
I was confused and had kinda mixed feelings seeing my project being copied with the same name and with almost the same "hand-drawn" page styling.

Just for comparison: comparison of the websites

On the one side - I'm feeling proud of what I did with doodlepatterns.xyz and it's being copied. It's kinda success for me.

On the other side - It's sad for me to see that the person who copied my project was so f***ng lazy and couldn't create something different. There is no extra value other than a lower price.

As a designer, I respect inspiration and mixing things, but absolutely can't stand direct copying.

Have anyone faced the same situation?

I think all product ideas have been copied in some way. It depends what you mean by "copied"?. If you're talking about 100% then no but similar yes.

u're right, they just too similar.

That is really sucky! I really feel for creators of artwork or site templates especially (NB: my wife is an artist), as their work is so much easier to grab and copy and on-sell, unlike code and databases that are stored on a server and used to generate stuff.

End of the day, I think the silver lining in this episode is that this incident will draw more attention to your original project (which I love by the way, and will look at purchasing for my own future projects). Best of luck, and I hope the bad actor is shut down soon for blatant copying and that you go on to enjoy much success!

I can't see him as a competitor, since my site was just an MVP version of something much interesting. :)

lets hope they are lazy enough to directly iframe your entire site :). You know what to do in that case :).

Yep, luckily someone noticed it on their PH launched and commented.

The comment got a ton of upvotes so actually started driving traffic to our project.

Wow. That's great everything turned that way for you :)
After all, a copy is just a copy, with less chance of succeeding.

It still got 900 upvotes :(
