Have you considered launching a startup using an unusual domain extension(.top, .xyz, .club, .info)?
What would you chose if .com and .io are not available:
- A .com name far from perfect, maybe not too catchy.
- A suboptimal .io extension, more catchy but still far from optimal.
- One of the unusual domain extensions(.top, .xyz, .club, .info). Some of them don't sound too bad to me.
Would you consider starting with 3 them moving to 2 or 1, or simply ignoring 3?
I registered a few .club addresses but later found more suitable .com addresses. In the end, I discovered non-tech people were adding.com to the end of unusual domains and that was problematic for me.
It mostly depends on who your target users are. If they happen to be tech savvy, domains like .so, .io, is not much of a problem. heck I have seen a founder run multiple businesses using the .fyi domain & be successful. Not only that I've successfully built, monetised and had a short 4 figure exit on a side project that was on .xyz domain.
I'd also stick to .io, .com, .co - If it's an app you could also consider ".app" like www.linear.app or putting a "use", "join" before like https://usefathom.com/, https://uselumin.co/ (our domain)
Personally I tend to dislike the getthis.com, even when I see nice products built on such domains. In that case, because it gives me hints that the website is not the main product. Might work for an app/extenstion,....
But .app is a good idea to keep in mind.
If the preferred .com is not in active use, get a quote for it
Do more brainstorming, idea generation, keyword research, come up with at least 20 alternative variants. Maybe you will end up liking one of the new variants more, and have better domain options :-)
Brainstorming makes sense, I know we are usually fixed on idea and it's hard to get the higher context because we remain focused on details.
I always recommend .com to clients
But for my own business we use https://dvnc.tech/ (but part of our brand is deviating from the norm)
not aware that much about .tech, at first glance gives a good impression. I think .dev is also a good fit for programming/design websites, especially that there are a few big names established names such as web.dev.
We would've gone with .dev however we didn't want people to think of us as "developers"
We went with .tech so people thought of us deviating technology as a whole :)
