Have you fallen in love with the solution over the problem?

I saw a great tweet from Sahil Lavingia recently about the differences between falling in love with your solution vs. falling in love with the problem.

Have you fallen in love with the problem? Or your solution?

I think this is getting at "focus". Do you focus on the solution or the problem. (sirens false dichotomy)

Focusing on the problem may look like: What is the user trying to do and why?
Focusing on the solution may look like: How does the user do it in the tool?

I think you can get overly invested in figuring out how-the-user-does-it and wind up forgetting about the "what" and "why". I've certainly done this before. I think of it as getting swept up in possibility as opposed to the hard needs of the user.

Lately I've been checking myself to make sure Brooklet follows the needs of the user. Which means tossing out ideas that are really cool, but dont solve the user's problems. https://www.brooklet.app/

Yeah that's a great point - there's a phase where you need to action-oriented for sure and just get to work on a solution. I think the falling in love with the solution thing comes after the point where you've reached product/market fit with your solution and then at some point the question becomes are you still in love with the problem or are you too focused on your solution and biased by it.

If you see a product that serves the end customer's problem well, are you happy about it or are you sad b/c it competes with you?
