I'm re-reading Atomic Habits, and he says:
"One of the most effective things you can do to build better habits is join a culture where your desired behavior is the normal behavior. New habits seem achievable when you see others doing them everyday."
This got me wondering, have you joined any communities for the purpose of helping you change your behavior or create new habits? Has it helped? What's worked for you? I'd love to hear your thoughts and experiences.
I have aspirations to be a writer. I joined Medium years ago when it first started, and 750 words just recently (just finished their January writing challenge). And am doing Ship 30 for 30 with @treelady
She and I are also building our own goal tracking community to help solve that dilemma. We want to surround people with others that are going after similar goals. A community of encouragement where users can grow in public, so to speak.
We're still early in development, but you can check us out at strively.io. We'd love user testers.
that sounds awesome! can't wait to check it out. Learning in communities like the one it sounds like you're building has honestly been life-transforming for me, and I'm sure yours will have the same impact :)
Would you be willing to discuss your experiences with me for part of our user research?
I can't agree more with the power of 'social accountability'. It always works tremendously on me.
I personally did few things:
Thank you for sharing! Congratulations on getting back to writing, that's huge! Also, Objet seems super cool, I'm always trying to make sure that my spending matches my values. Looking forward to checking it out
ooooh ☺️ big up for the kinds words 🤙
I've got two. I've created a monthly newsletter with my closest 120 or so friends. And I am accountable to everyone during my monthly newsletter.
Secondly, I found two close friends to jump on a WhatsApp and work on habits and personal development together.
You have a lot of close friends! 😀 really appreciate both of these examples, and you for sharing them. Thank you!
WritersHour.com and Focusmate.com have both been pretty transformational for me, in terms of accountability, and feeling part of a community (especially Writers' Hour).
Ohhh, I haven't heard of these, looking forward to checking them out. Thank you for sharing your experience, I appreciate it!
I joined weekend club to help keep me somewhat accountable and for the feeling of knowing I’m not the only one doing this nor the only one who is trying to fire it out. So whilst I didn’t join to create a new habit, I would say I joined to reinforce one I had to make it more consistent.
Interesting! Thank you for sharing! Has it become more consistent?
Most definitely. The fact that I’m not only paying but that others in the group are making progress motivates me even more
both of those are hugely important (anecdotally, I can relate to what you said, and according to the science of behavior change it's important to have a commitment device (paying for it) and social norms)
Not the communities but reading about the habits, helps to keep track.
i think great communities already have some of this built-in.
these are
ritualsor cultural behaviors that the community and/or the early members institute.... so find groups that do this! or, create a new one!
