We finally launched Good Game Shelf, our board game recommendation site!

Please check it out, would love feedback of any kind:
    https://goodgameshelf.com/recommendations/settlersofcatan

We are starting with a blog format, but we eventually want to move to a more comprehensive algorithm-based recommendation tool. Our primary goal at the moment is to get a bit of traffic and learn about what board gamers want most (especially newer players).

    1. 2

OMG, how fun! What a great vertical to go after :-)

      1. 1

Thanks you! We're not 100% sure where it will take us but hopefully that presents itself to us down the road : )

    2. 2

It might be cool to see a gameplay video for the ones you're recommending.

FWIW, I actually like that the recommendations' source is human rather than algorithm based. It may be lower-scale, but it feels higher quality. Doubling down on the human aspect (aka videos) might be an alternative to learning how to make it easier to scale.

      1. 2

Totally agree! Videos would be a cool addition in the future - we could even partner with some great youtubers for board games.

Also I do agree, the human aspect is always going to be better in the recommendations category. I think there is an interesting transition point between being a casual vs. hard-core gamer. At the moment, all sites, especially boardgamegeek, cater to hard-core players who just "know games." An algorithm may help that transition, but we're thinking the blog aspect could stay for a wider audience.

        1. 1

That's funny, I sent your site to a board game enthusiast friend of mine and he sent me boardgamegeek. As someone who's not a board game aficionado, I was immediately overwhelmed and turned off by the site. Yours is way more digestible.

Also, FWIW, my family has started playing more board games during COVID. I'll reference your site next time we're looking for a new board game. We really liked Catan! Perhaps that's a niche that you may be interested in going after? Good luck!

          1. 1

Hey thanks for sharing it! Let me know if you have other games you like to play and would want recommendations for. Working on new articles every couple weeks.

Also, boardgamegeek (BGG) is definitely overwhelming and we're trying to go completely against that, so I'm glad it comes through. BGG indeed is a wealth of great information but the structure makes it difficult for new and veterans alike to find what they need.

Thanks! Yeah, we were debating how the heck to start this project. We definitely have thought about an algorithmic approach to start and it just would have required so much data and may not even be what we needed.

When we realized we could do a blog in a way that feels more like a tool vs. blog, it was immediately the right MVP.

Definitely agree here. This is actually our 4th project together though, but in the beginning, we certainly were using Hexicon as a way to test our teamwork before working on new stuff.

Regardless, we have been finding our strengths to be different (e.g. dev, design, marketing, writing) so we can focus on what we like to do. We have a mix of games/tools/ideas under our business so this approach has been working haha

I've started on a competitive running app for amateur runners. You register with your strava account, create a race & invite your friend(s). Your strava runs are monitored and used for the race to create leaderboards for the fastest pace, most miles, most elevation gain and most time.

Have it fully functional and am tweaking on the design and way you interact with the app.

    1. 2

This sounds cool! I am not too familiar with Strava but I thought it already had leaderboards - are you ranking new metrics that it doesn't already show?

Mostly just curious, I'd be happy to share with some friends who run a lot too : )

      1. 2

Good question @singlecolor! Strava does have leaderboards for segments, routes & clubs but doesn't provide tools for creating competition or games between friends. This does that.

Initially we'll support running relay races, then will move on to heads up, co-op games & maybe more sports. I'm mainly building this for a group of friends and I who just want to stay more accountable and feel more motivated when exercising with others.

        1. 1

I see, that's a cool addition. Relay races and co-op running games sound especially fun. Also sounds much more engaging than a regular leaderboard since it has a direct social aspect with close friends.

Keep it up and good luck, projects that start as something for a group of friends tend to turn out well : )

I'm testing an MVP called magic.photos. It's a magic wand for e-commerce photos. About to start doing some customer interviews to see if there's a need.

    1. 1

Wow, this is like Nirvana for Etsy and Shopify sellers :-) Nice!

I hope you're right! Haven't started validating it but your comment is a good sign!

that is a hell of a question to answer in a comment thread!

Just did an AMA with @DamianThompson. He has a lot of great thoughts

I am planning to start a new project that will feature all your stats from twitter, producthunt and indiehacker in a single page but IH don't have an api 🙃

I'm building an app that randomly reminds you of the habits you want to develop. Think "drink more water," "reach out to a person you love," or "you can achieve anything you set your mind to." You can select how often you want to be reminded and in which time frame. That's particularly important for encouragements to go to the gym. A future version will allow you to respond to the reminders allowing you to answer powerful questions like "what's the value you want to create today?" That way, you keep track of your thoughts, journaling in a conversation with yourself.

Hi Rosie. I have a little win to share. I'm not sure if I shared this before. I unexpectedly launched a pilot course on July 6 and 30 candidates registered. Unexpected in that I didn't expect anybody to register. This is how it happened. I did a webinar where I shared an idea for an online mastery course and out of the blues I had 30 students. As at today we are about 25 students as 5 withdrew due to financial constraints. Fee was between $122 to $166 at the current US$ exchange rate. Total income generated is $3454 out of which $1122 has been paid. Planning to design and develop two full blown courses based on the feedback from the pilot. The course runs for 12 weeks, and we enter the 7th week on Sunday 16th August. The title of the course is iBMC (Internet Business Mastery Course). This pilot is a combo incorporating a foundation and an intermediate course. The two courses will run independently when I launch them in September/October. I'm not sure what the fee will be as the local currency keeps falling against the dollar. My idea here is to say webinars still hold potent financial punches. Though it kicked off in July, we're still learning and tweaking a lot of things, so it's an ongoing learning process. Hope this helps someone.

      That's awesome! Congrats.

Started working on the iphone app for https://pathroute.io

From customer feedback the app will be used a lot more by the drivers or delivery professionals and makes it easier for managers to track and follow progress.

I launched my financial guidance and price comparison web app on Product Hunt two days ago: https://www.producthunt.com/posts/koody.

I would really appreciate feedback on usefulness, design and usability. Thanks!

A few days ago, one of my customers suggested that it would be really helpful if there could be an option to filter Howuku Heatmap data by segment group.

Today, I announce the launch of Confetti heatmap where you can visualize your Heatmap with segmented data to further drill down where all the action happens!

Yes I started a podcast, it’s doing okay but I need to get more traffic

Let me know what you think please

  11. 1

Started to put up more original content among my social media channels including Twitter and LinkedIn. I'm doing this because I wanna practice my microscopy skills.

  12. 1

I created a simple site to convert things, like text to upper case, rgb to hex, and so on. My idea is to put some ads on it and get to the first Google page by optimizing it for SEO. I'll also keep adding content on it on my spare time, so maybe in a few months it will be very complete.

It's nothing new, but I wanted to make a simple little project from scratch to see where it goes. You can check it here https://nice-converter.com

I'm starting a new project! The basic idea is that creators can upload images to make their own e-cards to send and share with others. (My sister and a group of her friends came up with this.) So far I've only worked on the e-card animation (https://sponge-nifty-judo.glitch.me), but I am planning out the application logic and etc.

  14. 1

I started writing down my course "Communicating (with Developers)" — almost done with the source text :-) Next steps: audio recordings, then video and presentation recording!

      "I'm good with people!" ;-P

  15. 1

    ... my Youtube channel.

I'm not sure I want feedback though 😜 it's bad, and I know it. But it will get better 🤩

... or I will focus on writing. Wait & see.

I like it! Recently installed vim mode for visual studio code so I don't have to use the trackpad on my laptop anymore :D

Thanks! I'm a total complete 100% beginner in Youtube and Videos and all this kind of stuff, so I'm very happy to read that :)

We launched https://thelinkhub.io - Linkhub enables you to create secure & private link collections and easily share them with others.

Would love to hear your feedback!

Is it like WhatsApp? How does it really work?

? Did you comment on the correct post? If you did then please elaborate a bit :)

  17. 1

Technically didn't start it this month, but recently enough:

Wishlist allows you to collect and organize user feedback, and have users vote on the features and issues that they feel have the most priority. It's currently in beta, and open to anyone who wants to try it out.
