Health and fitness for the busy indie hacker

I'm currently working on a project that is a strong passion of mine that involves health and fitness, and I was hoping to see how many of you would be interested in joining.

Aside from being a father and running an accounting business with my wife, I'm also an avid martial artist that's big into health and fitness. When I was younger, I was overweight and the stress it caused on my mental health was very heavy. However, when I joined the wrestling team everything changed.

Since then, I've trained for +15 years and have competed competitively in wrestling, brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) and mixed martial arts. What I've always found is that the workouts from these martial arts were a) much more engaging, b) burned more calories, and c) you could learn new skills. And as much as I love lifting, it can be boring.

With that, my project involves the following: quick, efficient martial arts-related workouts in under 10 minutes streamed live together.

The reasoning behind the 10 minutes is because most indie hackers are swamped with running their businesses. 10 minutes would be fast and efficient, and it would allow people to get on with their day vs. pushing their health in the backburner.

As for streaming live, most of us need motivation to work out--myself included. Streaming live would allow for accountability, and we would be able to track your participation to show you how you're doing.

Finally, every workout would be martial arts-related so you could learn something new (e.g. boxing combos, muay thai set-ups, the infamous "shrimp" in BJJ). Prior experience is not required. Additionally, all workouts are bodyweight only, so no equipment necessary as well.

Anyways, sorry for the long post. If you're interested in this, please let me know and I'd love to chat. Thanks!

That's something very useful for everyone, especially in today's pandemic period when we all are closed in our houses and we have movement deficit. Indeed, it sounds great - just 10 minutes workout. But everyone who has at least a little idea about sports understands that if the main workout has 10 minutes, any way you have to do a warm-up before it about 7-8 min and a hitch after also about 5-6 min. So, in conclusion, we get a 25 min workout. Unfortunately, the sedentary lifestyle negatively affects the state of the body and overall health. Especially for me, I chose cardio for my home training on https://www.modernfit.com/programs . It is easy to make if you are always at home as now or when your job is linked to staying at home and you have no possibility to go to the gym, like me. But frankly speaking, I'm against sports like the fight, because I have an example of how my friend suffered because of this. From the one side, thus he "discharges" and spills out all the negative energy, from the other side, he always has back problems and regularly consults a specialist to straighten vertebrae at their places.

The topic is important. I started jogging a couple of years ago and would prefer this over any indoor exercise. Of course, for many people, the indoor activity is the only suitable solution.

My concern it the time. I've learned from jogging that what matters is the time of exercise, not speed.

Shortly, better something the nothing, but isn't 10 minutes just a placebo?

Hey @Dimmi, thanks for the comment!

To start, the workouts would begin at 10 minutes with a starting time of 6am est (first thing in the morning to get it out of the way) and then another in the evening. This wouldn't be a full replacement for a workout just yet; depending on how this goes, I envision growing this to 30 minutes or more.

The beauty of martial arts workouts is that they're high intensity interval training (HIIT) workouts vs. slow intensity such as jogging. I won't go into details, but basically HIIT workouts are very effective, can burn more calories, increase anaerobic capacity and much more. Not sure if you've ever tried wrestling, but it's tough! :)

During my fight and competition camps, I did mostly HIIT workouts, which got me into great shape. My goal would be to replicate these workouts into 10 minute bursts and ultimately, help indie hackers get fit and healthy.

Hope that helps. Love to hear your thoughts on it and what features you might want to see.

Yea, I used to do martial arts in my twenties. When I tried to do some preps years after, I got a "frozen shoulder" for more than a year. I hope you are experienced with HIIT :)

The AR from @nvlee sounds really cool. Changing the environment can't be overvaluated.

Absolutely! And yes, I'm experienced with HIIT. I'm still an active trainer and instructor, so I only teach what I myself have done.

Agree 100% on the environment. One thing I've always enjoyed with the workout environments of martial arts gyms is the camaraderie. I'm thinking something like a networking/social session 10 minutes after the workout to chat with others while we all cool down.

          What do you think?

          1. 2

            Sounds perfect!

Offtopic, but I have two kids running around me right now, one is a toddler. Now I'm really sure if AR is ok with such surrounding :)

😆 Good point! I'll have to schedule a time when the little ones are napping 😃

i think your project has some good ground, I have an idea that is based on similar logic: the burnout, exhaustion and tiredness that is consequence of long working hours, mostly in front of a computer, but the offer is a curated site that offers ASMR and relaxation music to listen when taking a break or during working time. keep digging fo the best way to make it and deliver it.

Thanks @JMarceloFig! Your idea sounds great and would be interested in learning more.

I really appreciate this 10 minute routine since I personally find it really hard to keep more time for a workout. But 10 minutes is certainly not much. Often, I find myself seeking short routines on the net or Youtube that I can do at home. Combining such workouts with natural best boosters such as those mentioned here https://bodyly.nl/top-testosteron-boosters/ can be a great way to better health and fitness.

    Update

So I decided to pursue my passion and life's work by launching Bourne Fighter.

I have the utmost respect for indie makers, entrepreneurs, and founders. The journey to creating something special is so grueling, challenging, and tiring. Some days I wonder why we made this leap when we could have taken the safe route.

    Nonetheless, here we are.

If you're struggling to get your workouts in or just bored of your current routine and want to try something new, come join me. Learn MMA, engage with other members, and most of all, have fun.

I'll be hosting a free event tomorrow Friday, June 11th at 5pm EST. You can register here.

Thanks everyone, hope to see you all soon!

@nvlee 100% agree, the atmosphere makes a huge difference.

Could I ask what would you want to see in a remote workout atmosphere to make it more engaging?
