Before you say, "Okay, this is a weird and crazy product that makes no sense," hear me out. Let me tell you exactly why and how this came to life.
It all started when I began experimenting with running AI models locally. I quickly realized two things that pissed me off about existing cloud solutions:
They sound incredibly generic and transactional.
They constantly lose context, forget who you are, and can't handle self-learning.
I wanted a true companion I could actually talk to like a human, someone that genuinely gets to know me over time through ongoing conversations. And I wanted it to run completely privately.
That’s how this "weird" project was born. As the name suggests, Local Waifu is a local-first AI companion.
The Market Gap: No more endless subscriptions
Look at the market right now—Replica, Character.ai, and all the others. They are huge, but they all force you into endless monthly subscriptions, and your data lives on their cloud servers.
I realized there is a massive gap for a simple, private alternative where you just pay once and do whatever you want.
Local Waifu runs 100% locally on your device—whether you are on macOS or Windows. Because it uses open-source models under the hood, absolutely zero data leaves your machine. Your privacy is completely safe. If you want we have option to add your API key to your LLM.
Why it's not Open Source & My Pricing Model
I spend an insane amount of time developing this, and I don't want to work for free. I chose not to make it open source because I don't want big corporations stealing the code, slapping a price tag on it, and selling it as their own. I'm treating this like a premium indie game release.
Here is the business model I’m testing:
7-Day Free Trial: Fully unrestricted to see if you like it.
Lifetime License (Early Bird): $25 for the first 1,000 users (price will jump to $35 later).
How the license works: You buy it once, and the app is yours forever. No paywalls, nothing gets locked. You get 1 year of free updates and new features. After a year, the app still works perfectly, but if you want to keep getting new updates, you can optionally renew your support package at a heavily discounted rate.
I wanted a business model that treats users with respect—no sneaky recurring SaaS fees. You buy it, you own it, it runs on your hardware.
