Hello fellow Indie Hackers!
My name is Brian and I am a fintech developer building my own personal finance app designed specifically for Canadians.
I started working on Boreal in March, 2026 because I wanted a better way to manage my own finances. After looking at the existing apps, I noticed that they do one or more of the following:
Are US-first with Canadians as an afterthought
Charge in USD causing FX fees for Canadians
Ask you to spend hours each month logging transactions
Have you go through an hour long onboarding to setup your dashboard
Show you charts with no explanations so you have to decode them yourself
I wanted something that I could simply connect my accounts and have it tell me what happened, what it means, and what to watch out for next in plain words. I have built Boreal to do just that.
Boreal connects your Canadian and US bank accounts all in one place. Then it uses AI to provide you with personalized insights that explain to you what's happening with your money so you don't have to figure it out yourself. This means "Food And Drink - $715" turns into "You spent 24% more on Food and Drink compared to last month, mostly from delivery apps like Skip which accounted for $94 of the increase".
I'd appreciate honest feedback on the positioning and whether or not the value is immediately apparent. I'd also be interested to learn what would make you trust a new fintech app enough to connect your bank accounts.
Thanks hackers!
The part that stood out to me wasn't the account aggregation.
Most finance apps help people see what happened. Boreal seems to be trying to explain why it happened and whether it actually matters. That's a different promise. If users start thinking of it as something that interprets their financial life instead of just visualizing it, that feels much more differentiated than another personal finance dashboard.
Thanks for the input Aryan!
That's exactly what I am going for. I personally felt the pain of looking at dashboards and still having to put in effort to figure out what everything meant. I wanted Boreal to feel like a tool that actually explained it to you so you didn't have to put in that work.
Do you feel like the value was immediately clear from the landing page? Any advice on how you think I could highlight this better would be greatly appreciated!
I think the landing page points in the right direction.
The reason I'm hesitant to give positioning advice in a few comments is that my answer depends less on copy and more on one assumption Boreal is making about the role it wants to play in a user's financial decisions.
I'd be happy to explain how I arrived at that. What's the best email to reach you on?
That'd be great! You can email me at brianadair@getborealfinance (it won't let me put the .com at the end)
Thanks! I’ve just sent it over.
Looking forward to hearing your thoughts whenever you have a chance.
