Help: I want simple, plain text-only email automation. Does this exist?
I don't want Mailchimp, Drip, Convertkit, etc. - there's too much stuff in these products I don't want.
All I want is the ability to:
- manually send a plain-text email to my list (in bulk, with their names templated in)
- define some multi-step campaigns (all plain-text). One for when a user installs my app, one for when they join my mailing list, one for when the user converts from free trial to paid, maybe a couple more.
- collect email addresses from a form on my website
- manually add contacts
I don't even want to track open rates, click-through rates, etc. Maybe delivery success rate, but that's it.
Does this exist?
Almost every email marketing service allowed plain text delivery i.e. MailerList, EmailOctopus. If you need an affordable option, you can try Sendfox.
I use EmailOctopus for my project, sometimes I will include emojis and gifs
I totally feel the desire to keep the functionality slim, but keep in mind that those other tools also manage deliverability - aka making sure your emails actually get to your subscribers' inboxes - whereas anything that sends using Amazon SES and Gmail and other budget options do not.
Functionality is key of course, but if the emails don't get to the inbox, it doesn't matter what functions the tool has/doesn't have!

Have you tried Mautic? The open source software is easy and allows you do all the thing you mentioned.
You can self-host a server on AWS and set it up to use AWS SES for a low-cost solution.
You can manually add contacts, setup multi-set campaigns.

I’m currently obsessed with n8n.io . You can automate sending email based on all kinds of criteria.
You could use use Splitbee.io automations for that. Currently we don't have first party support for mails (so you could send a webhook and let your server send the mails)
You'll get the webhook in the right time (on an event, or delayed with user data)

You could use something like Sendy.co + Amazon SES.
I haven't tried it yet, but I'm definitely planning on it.

Most cold email software takes this minimalistic approach by default to prevent spam issues. Therefore using a tool like lemlist.com and using a few zapier integrations(e.g., to set up forms) could work.
