Help me buy a domain

So, I have a few very simple ideas that can't be made into a full-blown SaaS app but can generate revenue from AdSense. These ideas are somewhat validated (talked to a couple of my friends and family). Now, I don't want to buy a domain for each one of these ideas. I want to settle down with one domain and release the products under sub-domains.
So far, I have decided on these two ideas for domain name:

  1. bymyname.com or bymycompany.com (so the subdomains would be something like product.bycompany.com) or
  2. companyhub.com (so the subdomains would be like product.companyhub.com giving it a feel that it is a part of a suite of more products).

Do you guys think it's a good idea? If so, which one of the above two is better than the other? If not, I am open to other ideas but generally, I don't want to buy a domain for such trivial idea.

    Hi Abhisek,

in general, it comes down to how big of a factor you think branding is going to play later-on.
If the products you build are going to be very different from each other, or they target a different target group, using the same domain can become confusing. But if the products are in the same niche, a unified domain name might actually make a lot of sense.

From an SEO perspective Google treats subdomains as their own entities (for now) so if you use subdomains (not subdirectories!) you are in the clear at the moment. But Google has stated before that they were treating subdomains like subdirectories (which has not been the case), so this might change soon.

If I had to choose between the two, I'd say the first version 'product.bymycompany.com' is a bit catchier and not as 'enterprise' as the other :)

@louissugar thank you for such a detailed reply. I didn't think about the SEO issue. But your points are worth thinking about.

Buy cheap domains. Get an ok name (for instance, if "amazingname.com" is too expensive, try "myamazingname.co" or "helloamazingname.xyz"). Consider it an investment. You should find dirt cheap ones for only less than $20 a year.

We use google domains. .com domains start at $12 if you can think of something new. The pricing is really clear.

    Namaste Abhisek,

No, its a horrible idea to do it on a subdomain.

Go for individual domains so that in future it won't be much of hassle even if you plan to drop the site or sell it to someone.

Also, think in terms of SEO as well.

One subdomain is about dogs, other subdomain is about submarines, though you can differentiate it & let Google know that both the subdomains are non-related via the Google Webmaster tools but think about the impact on the primary domain.

Oh and we millennials don't like to type long domain names to access any website :p

@BlaZe thank you for the inputs. Really appreciate your taking time to point out the issues.

This^. Not that they aren't good ideas, but I wouldn't consider this validated.
