Help me choose a newsletter service! 🗞
I'm on day 70 of #The100DayProject and I'm away for the weekend so don't have lots of time for Target 2030 stuff sadly. Today I was looking into ways to send newsletters and reviewing a few options but none quite fit...so I need some advice or recommendations!
Things I've considered so far:
Substack was okay, like I enjoy the simplicity of it, but because the newsletter for Target 2030 is a benefit of being a donor I can't a.) make it public for non-donors (substack leaves all posts public unless you go with paid access model), or b.) have subscribers pay for access when on Substack as they've already 'paid' via being donors.
Mailchimp is obviously a classic, but I never really got along with it in the past. It doesn't have the same simplicity of substack either 🤷🏻♂️I signed up again but I'm still not getting the right vibe from it.
I see loads of others out there but it's a crowded space - does anyone have recommendations?
My requirements are basically that I can manually (or automatically) add people who've 'opted in' when becoming recurring donors to Target 2030 via Donorbox. It should be the case that only donors can access the newsletter.

I've used Mailchimp in the past.
Decided to go for EmailOctopus because in my effort to support bootstrapped companies they are one of them. They did an IH podcast, plus sponsored the recent Indie London meetup too. Seems nice so far, though haven't collected or sent any emails yet.
Thanks Rosie, I checked it out, seems interesting but I'm not sure about juggling AWS + EmailOctopus, it's just another thing to think about - I guess I'll end up going down the Mailchimp route, it's familiar enough and whilst I don't love it it's still better than most alternatives I find!
What are you looking for exactly? It's a newsletter so it goes to people's Inboxes, right? But you also want it to be available online but for subscribers only? If you're sending it to them via email, what's the point of it also being online if it's not going to be publicly available?
That's why I've ruled out Substack, cause indeed I don't need it to be held online somewhere. So I will just go with some other email marketing tool, I can see myself ending up back on mailchimp to be honest, I was trying to avoid it though
Right, that makes sense. Take a look at Campaign Monitor - https://www.campaignmonitor.com/. It's much easier to work with than MailChimp and if Donorbox doesn't let you copy subscribers over directly, you could do that with Zapier.
Campaign Monitor's marketing is very product-oriented but they have templates for newsletters too that you can customize.
