I've started something I'm calling 12 for 12. 12 apps. 12 months. The goal is to ship more, while making it difficult to build much more than an MVP. If I find a product that is "stickier", I double down for a month.
With that said, I'm awaiting approval from Apple on March's project and would like to get started on April. I've got several ideas and am curious if any of these stick out to any of you.
I am currently leaning towards the Pushup/Any Challenge idea.
User selects from list of streaming apps they currently have access to and can view a channel guide that shows what streaming service the tv show or movie is on.
Essentially while you're watching tv, if you come across a movie or show and find yourself making it to commercial and sticking around, maybe you should hop to a streaming provider that you pay for that has it. Not sure how many people pay for streaming services and live tv.
Twitter bookmarks is literally just a list of your bookmarks. You can't tag them, can't search, can't find all bookmarks by a specific user, etc. That seems like an opportunity for a quick win, especially since Twitter recently made those bookmark numbers public on the Tweet. I've found myself bookmarking things and then thinking where is that bookmark; even search alone would be incredibly useful.
Technically not a paradox, but I’ve been spinning on this idea of creating a game around the birthday paradox/problem.
If you survey a random group of just 23 people there is actually about a 50–50 chance that two of them will have the same birthday.
The idea is you host a birthday party and start inviting celebrities to your party. When you invite someone to your party, you don’t know their birthday, however once they attend you do. The moment 2 people at the party share a bday, the party is over. During the game you see who's at your party, the number of people, & the % chance the next attendee bursts the game.
I’d probably also make it social so you can input yourself and a couple friends to start. I’d love to make the app animation like, almost like Mii characters walking around your Wii world.
Directory of grocery items and the aisle it's most commonly in, followed by the 2nd and 3rd. You ever google, "where to find _____ in the grocery store". It's abysmal. All you get are these massive ad filled blogs with way more content then you actually care about. My guess is this is the case because the blogs make them rank higher.
Input YouTube url. AI parses the entire audio and turns it into a blog post. There’s options for setting some parameters on the biog post (style of the post, how long, etc.).
Expanding on this idea, it would be neat to provide what type of content to turn it into. Other examples like a Twitter thread, TikTok video, etc.
Follow your friends. Post where you've been, the dish you had, etc.
Provide some parameters such as what meal, type of dish, ethnicity, difficulty, flavors. Tap go and AI generates a recipe for you. The app would be super playful and cartoonish, essentially surrounded around a cartoon chicken generating the recipes for you. In theory, you could brand it as several different cartoon animals (Cow for beef, salmon for seafood, some cartoon vegetable for vegetarian).
Sync Apple Watch with whatever you are streaming. It detects when you fell asleep and therefore where you were at in the show.
If you've never heard of bionic text, it enables you to read quicker. Check out this reddit post.
This extension would convert text on the screen to bionic text enabling you to read faster.
Uses crowdsourcing to enable users to share when the ice cream machine is working at the McDonalds near them.
Compete with other users around the world in doing a daily pushup challenge. The challenge is do 20 pushups per day. You login to the app and mark if you did the pushups. It shows a bunch of fun statistics about how many other people did 20 pushups, what your daily streak is, what your streak is compared to others in the app, what percentile your streak is in, etc.
In theory, this could be applied to really any daily or weekly challenge. You make it competitive against strangers and entice people by making it super analytical.
This one actually isn't an iOS app, but I had a concept where you pay a monthly fee and I blog for you. The main goal is to boost SEO, so potentially target small businesses who aren't tech savvy and are looking to boost their SEO/brand presence online (Google Plummers near me, scroll to 10th page, and build a blog for them).
If you made it this far, wow. Thank you! I'm also tweeting about my 12 for 12 journey if you're interested in following along.
Wow ! Nice challenge !
If it can help you decide, you could run tools to evaluate the potential of your apps:
These tools are complementary to conduct market research within minutes.
Hi Pat,
Very interesting challenge! Congrats on the results so far.
My vote goes to "Turn YouTube video -> Blog Post" as I feel that could solve a real problem for many vloggers/bloggers.
Maybe it could even have a feature for anyone to get a summary of the video in text form. I hate to spend many minutes watching a youtube video only to find out it didn't contain the info I was looking for. Browsing over 5 paragraphs of text gives me that answer in a few seconds.
Hope this helps
Frans
ps. I see your blog on https://www.pattammaro.com/blog is quite empty, maybe you can scratch your own itch?
Yep my blog is terribly empty. It's a travesty.
Thanks for the feedback. I still haven't decided what to pursue. I wonder if that idea could make for a good Chrome Extension. While on YouTube video, click chrome extension and it summarizes it for you.
Yes, the idea of creating a chrome extension sounds interesting. I know what to choose between having to watch a video of 12 mins only to find out there is no real interesting content versus clicking your extension and viewing a summary.
I believe it is more difficult to monetize though, it's more a feature and not a product. But that's just my opinion.
