Help my landing page not look like a scam
I whipped together an MVP to prove out this app idea. I wanted to just use a template from carrd or a similar site, but none of them followed the advice that https://www.julian.com/learn/growth/landing-pages gives (which I found from IH). Now I think the page just looks like a scam website. How can I make this landing page better?
My recommendation: download a landing page template. Even one that doesn't follow that advice is better than what you have right now.

@MacroChip Yes and no. It's just that it comes down to experience if you want to make something that looks good, and we can't suddenly give you experience.
Use a landing page template to start getting your business results now. And in your spare time, when you want to have fun learning new things (and you wouldn't slow down your business), take a look at flat design (Google) and material design (https://material.io/). These'll give you some starting points.
But always focus on getting business results first, not on learning everything and doing everything yourself. (Unless learning is your primary goal.)
If I would start teaching you design things, I would feel bad. Because I would be sabotaging your potential by holding your business back by teaching you design. There are great templates out there (search for "minimal, typography, conversion").

Congratulations on your launch.
Although it is much easier to just grab standard theme from somewhere, I would not agree that it is the best way to go. I think that practicing a little design might be beneficial in launching a side business.
There are several things that come to my mind.
First. Fonts.
Standard practice is to use one Sans the other Serif. But you can use Geometric/Humanist OldStyle/Slab. The rule of thumb is to use two fonts that give contrast to each other. I mean, they should be different You can augment that contrast by using color/size
Second. Avoid design that doesn't convey any message. Your background doesn't convey any message, so, it can safely be removed.
Third. Maintain visual hierarchy. Make page more bold. Increase size of the pictures at least twice. Increase size of the heading text. Decrease size, and probably color (make it tinted), of secondary text. Add more contrast. Pull related parts of the page together. Push unrelated parts apart.
Right now, your page "can't decide for itself" what are the most important parts of it. Different parts of it pull attention on themselves.
Make alignment visually stronger. Remove centered header and second header. Make them left aligned. Or, even better, make them both adhere to a centered line. Like:

Start from a template and then follow the best practices shown in the article (or in this article).
I'd suggest starting with one from somewhere like ThemeForest.
Going ground up Isa problem. You should definitely buy one the landing page templates.
